Share your wealth of knowledge. I used to dislike this phrase simply because one of my old managers used to say it all the time and i really did not care for him. His nickname was "scumbag" and you can draw a conclusion from that, haha.
For the most part, i would share what i knew anyways because i thought i was a nice guy. It wasn't until years later, when i was a manager, that i realized the potential of participating in and encouraging others to take part in the concept of freely sharing what we know. The collective wealth of our knowledge would bring us to new and exciting heights of reaching beyond our competitors abilities and ideas. And these things were most definitely realized.
As a soft metals artist now, a computer programmer before, i find that sharing techniques and photos of my creative processes are welcomed by other artists and sometimes help others learn. This is rewarding and still i retain a small amount of, "but this is my design...why should i give away my secrets?" Do you feel the same way?
From my experiences in the past, i gained an insight that addresses my question and provides me with a very comforting answer. If an artist has the talent, insight, knowledge, to recreate or expand on something that i had created then they certainly could without my explanation of techniques or creative process. A force of nature that i cannot stop from happening. If the artist has not these qualities then perhaps they could not recreate or expand.
There is also comfort in knowing that one or two of my designs took sometime for me to develop through a series of processes that would give another artist a worthy challenge to duplicate. And these i will not dispense the creative processes for to make it so easy.
